Does Call of Duty get better with age?

It is hard to believe that there could be a gamer who would not have heard anything about Call of Duty (CoD). A first-person shooter game has been one of the most popular games since 2003 and has quite a rich history. It is definitely the most successful video game of all time.

However, while some are happy and keep praising this game, others doubt whether this game is really still as good as before? Let's see how it has changed over the years!

Setting

First three CoD series (2003, 2005 and 2006) focused on the World War II (WWII) setting. The serie "Modern Warfare", released in 2007, brought the players into the fight of the present day. Another CoD serie "World at War" was introduced in 2008 and included fighting against Nazi Zombies. In 2009 "Call of Duty: Modern Warfaere 2" was realeased. It brought some massive changes as advanced Al system, co-op modes, swimming mechanics as well as water physics, etc.

Another Call of Duty series “Black Ops” was released in 2010. It was the first entry of “Black Ops” series, which was proud to have Zombies mode expanded. In the following year “Modern Warfare 3” was introduced which was named to be addictive by several famous games’ reviewers at the time. In 2012 “Call of Duty: Black Ops II” was released. It was the highest-selling CoD series of all time.

“Call of Duty: Ghosts” was introduced in 2013. It was the story whose setting was mostly told through the eyes of the main character of the game – Logan Walker. In 2014 a series “Advanced Warfare” was released by Sledgehammer Games for the first time. 2015 was quite successful for CoD as well as the third part of “Black Ops” was released. It was outstanding because each character had his own unique personality and set of abilities as well.

“Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare” was released in 2016 and it was the 13th CoD series. It brought the gamers to the fight in space. In 2017 CoD got back to its roots and introduced a series which focused on WWII. Another CoD shot was “Black Ops 4 and Blackout” in 2018. 2019 was extraordinary as the series “Modern Warfare” as well as mobile version of CoD was introduced. Finally, “Warzone” and “Black Ops Cold War” were released in 2020 and “Vanguard” in 2021.

Sales

Obviously, the game “Call of Duty” was a success, so its sales grew every year until 2014. Later, not all games were as successful as their creators had hoped. Often they were even openly accused of just wanting to make a lot of money, but not investing enough in what could make the game series better. For example, “Call of Duty: Ghosts” was widely criticized for its single-player campaign and lack of innovation. The dissatisfaction of the players was partly caused by the expanded gaming market, the growing supply of games and the desire to see something new that could surprise its players.

The developers of CoD hoped that the new settings would be enough to capture the hearts of players. However, not having the success they had hoped for, they even returned twice to the WWII theme from which they started their game series. The last such try was made in 2021. Although the game series boasted to have a great campaign and much to offer, it received a lot of criticism because of historical inaccuracies, Zombies mode and… One again, for lack of innovation. Therefore, although the exact numbers of how much was earned with "Call of Duty: Vanguard" are not known, it is said that it is undoubtedly much less than its creators expected.

Conclusion

So if you had to evaluate whether CoD has become better over the years, it would be difficult. Although the game has improved, the expectations of the players have definitely grown faster. However, despite the criticism, CoD remains the most popular one-player shooter. If you are interested in trying it, please, find IP changers for CoD, it will be beneficial for your game indeed. It will allow you to avoid regional restrictions as well as to play its multiplayer version with people all over the world.
